CASE STUDY
PROJECT PITCH – BRIGHTON PIER
Brighton Pier staff led an interactive session with Year 10 students from Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) to share insights into the pier’s past, present and possible future. The presentation also covered careers opportunities. They set the students a task: to design a project, ride or event that could be part of the pier’s development plans.
Aims: to introduce students to a local heritage and entertainment business, to encourage student collaboration and team work, a project-based approach to experiences of the workplace.
OUTCOMES
With no budget contraints, students were encouraged to
think freely. They worked in teams of 4-5. Ideas were
presented to the pier team through varied creative formats.
One team’s proposal – to merge entertainment and the
environment stood out as a concept with practical potential.
The students suggested informational areas around the pier
to highlight local wildlife above and below the waterline,
with wildlife identification quizzes and flyers for visitors.
“We were impressed by the students’ creativity and
professionalism. Their ideas were well-thought out,
innovative and showed a real understanding of the pier as
a business.” Jason Mannix, Director of HR
